Why Universalna: 30+ Years on the Market and Part of Fairfax Financial Holdings (Canada)
Universalna is known on the Ukrainian insurance market for more than travel policies: it also writes auto insurance, property insurance, liability insurance, and several other lines of business. The company has operated since 1991 and, since 2019, has been part of the international Fairfax Financial Holdings group, headquartered in Toronto, Canada. For someone choosing an insurer for a visa policy, that has a practical meaning: rather than a niche player that showed up recently with a single product, Universalna is a large, multi-line insurer with a long track record, the scale that comes with it, and an international shareholder that adds stability. For travel insurance specifically, the company offers coverage ranging from EUR 30,000 to EUR 50,000 depending on the destination country and the plan chosen, so a buyer can pick a policy above the required minimum for extra headroom in case of expensive treatment abroad. That's not the deciding factor for most applicants, since a consulate simply checks that the EUR 30,000 minimum is met, but for anyone who wants more coverage headroom, it's a noticeable advantage. The same goes for the Fairfax group: every accredited insurer meets the EUR 30,000 visa requirement equally, so belonging to an international group does not make a policy "better" in terms of coverage, but it matters to buyers who deliberately choose an insurer with an international owner.
On ownership: Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited (Canada) is a holding company founded in 1985 that, through its subsidiaries, is engaged in property and casualty insurance and reinsurance. Fairfax has been a shareholder of Universalna since 2019, when the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) also took a stake in the group's Ukrainian holding company. In January 2025, Fairfax bought out the EBRD's stake, and Universalna became wholly owned by the group.
What the policy covers, how long it's valid, and how to buy it
A Universalna visa policy covers urgent medical treatment, emergency hospitalization, repatriation, and death, with a minimum sum insured of EUR 30,000 (higher plans go up to EUR 50,000) and a 24/7 assistance line. For a Schengen type C visa, that requirement comes from Article 15 of the EU Visa Code (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009); for a national type D visa, the same EUR 30,000 figure comes from Poland's own Act on Foreigners (Ustawa o cudzoziemcach). The policy is valid for the full length of the visa applied for, up to one year.
Buying a Universalna policy works through the same homepage calculator: enter your destination country, travel dates, date of birth, and purpose of travel, choose Universalna among the insurers offered, and pay online. Note that Universalna has no separate karta pobytu program in our calculator, since that product comes only from Kniazha (set your location to “I'm abroad” there, then manually select Kniazha from the narrowed list). Our dedicated karta pobytu insurance page walks through the difference in full.
