Insurance for Studying in Poland: D Visa, Erasmus+, University and Dormitory

A student in Poland needs insurance for several different tasks, and each one calls for a different policy. For the national visa (type D) application, a standard visa policy is enough: at least EUR 30,000 of medical cover from any of our accredited insurers. But a visa policy only works while you hold a visa, and it does not meet the other requirements: accident and civil liability cover under Erasmus+, the cover for the whole study period that your university asks for, and a policy for moving into a dormitory or campus housing. For those tasks, the karta pobytu program from Kniazha fits, including for a karta pobytu issued for study, and you can buy it even when you are already abroad. Below is a short table of task and policy, followed by the details.

Task Visa insurance (any of the insurers) Karta pobytu program from Kniazha (including for study)
Applying for the national D visa for study Fits: EUR 30,000 minimum, works while you hold a visa Not needed at this stage

Moving into a dormitory or campus housing (university internal rules) Not designed for this task Fits: civil liability (OC) and accident cover (NNW)
Karta pobytu for study (from document submission and while the application is pending) Does not fit Fits: this is the policy built for exactly this task
The student is already abroad, for example working over the holidays and not returning to Ukraine Not designed for this situation Fits: you can buy it while you are already abroad

The scope and sums of the program depend on the variant you choose, so check the current terms in the calculator before you pay. Requirements of individual universities and Erasmus+ coordinators can differ, so confirm them in advance.

The D visa for study: which policy you need for the application

A Polish study visa is issued as a national visa (type D), and its insurance requirement comes not from the EU Visa Code but from Poland's Act on Foreigners (Ustawa o cudzoziemcach), because D visas sit outside the Schengen-harmonized rules. The requirement is simple: at least EUR 30,000 of cover, a 24/7 assistance line, and validity for the whole length of the visa, up to one year. There is no separate, higher "student" product at the visa stage, and the sum does not depend on the purpose of travel. At this stage you only need to set the travel purpose to "Teaching" (that is how the study option is labeled in the calculator) and pick any of the accredited insurers: Universalna, PZU Ukraina, Kniazha, or ETS. We selected the visa programs of these insurers in advance and checked their content so they are accepted by the visa center and the consulate. But a visa policy only works while you hold a visa and covers the application stage: the requirements of Erasmus+, your university, and your dormitory are separate tasks, covered below.

Erasmus+ and other exchange programs: which policy meets the program's requirements

Erasmus+ sets its own insurance requirements, independent of the consulate: at least EUR 30,000 of medical cover, accident insurance, and civil liability insurance. The visa policy you submit with your D-visa application does not cover that set, so the program's requirements call for a different policy.

The Erasmus+ requirements are met by the karta pobytu program from Kniazha: it includes both accident cover and civil liability (check the exact list and sums in the terms of the variant you choose). The other programs in the calculator do not meet these requirements. There is one more practical advantage: you can buy this program when the student is already abroad, for example working over the holidays and not returning to Ukraine. In the calculator, set "Your location" to "I'm abroad", then manually pick Kniazha from the insurer list that appears. Confirm the exact wording of the requirement with the Erasmus+ coordinator at your university.

University insurance after enrollment and a policy for the dormitory

The policy you used to get the visa only works within the visa period and does not cover the whole study period if your program runs longer. After enrollment, your university will ask for separate proof of health insurance for the whole academic year or period of stay: that is a different requirement, unrelated to the visa policy. A non-EU student usually has two options: voluntary NFZ insurance, a formal contract with the local NFZ branch at a fixed PLN 55.80 a month (based on a PLN 620 contribution base) that gives full access to public healthcare, or a private medical policy. Universities generally accept either, and the exact procedure is worth confirming with your faculty office or the international office, because formalities differ.

If you will live in a dormitory, the law does not set a mandatory insurance product just for the dormitory. But individual universities may require one in their internal rules, and without such insurance they can refuse to house you on campus. So check the requirements of your university or the dormitory administration in advance. Usually this means voluntary civil liability (OC) and accident (NNW) cover.

For both of these tasks, the cover for the whole study period that your university asks for and moving into a dormitory or campus housing, the karta pobytu program from Kniazha also fits (civil liability and accident cover are part of the program). You can buy it even when you are already abroad: in the calculator choose "I'm abroad" and manually pick Kniazha.

Exchange, traineeship, language course, and karta pobytu are separate situations

An exchange (Erasmus+), a traineeship, and a language course are related but separate situations with their own insurance details. A traineeship counts as its own visa category, "Trainee", separate from "Student", and a language course uses the same national D-visa standard but has its own paperwork. If you are already in Poland and applying for a karta pobytu for study, you need the separate karta pobytu program from Kniazha. We wrote a separate page for each situation:

Get insurance for studying: for the visa or for the program

For the D-visa application, set the travel purpose to "Teaching" in the calculator on the home page and pick any of the accredited insurers: the policy arrives by email, ready to print for your document package. For Erasmus+, university, or dormitory requirements, and for a karta pobytu for study, set "Your location" to "I'm abroad" and manually pick Kniazha from the insurer list.

Answers to customers’ questions

  • A national visa (type D) for study needs medical insurance of at least EUR 30,000 with a 24/7 assistance line, valid for the whole visa period, up to one year. There is no separate student product with higher cover at the visa stage: Poland's Act on Foreigners sets the same requirement for every purpose of travel. In our calculator, any of the accredited insurers issues this visa policy, and we checked their programs in advance for acceptance by the visa center and the consulate. The requirements of Erasmus+, your university, and your dormitory are different tasks, and the karta pobytu program from Kniazha fits those.

  • Visa insurance works while you hold a visa and is needed to submit the D-visa application. The karta pobytu program from Kniazha fits the Erasmus+ requirements (accident cover and civil liability), the cover for the whole study period that your university asks for, moving into a dormitory or campus housing, and the karta pobytu for study itself, and you can buy it when the student is already abroad. The other programs in the calculator do not cover those tasks. A short table of task and policy sits at the top of the page.

  • Erasmus+ requires at least EUR 30,000 of medical cover, accident insurance, and civil liability insurance. The karta pobytu program from Kniazha meets these requirements: it includes both accident cover and civil liability (check the current terms in the calculator). The other programs in the calculator do not. You can buy it even when the student is already abroad: set "Your location" to "I'm abroad" and manually pick Kniazha. Confirm the exact wording of the requirement with the Erasmus+ coordinator at your university.

  • After enrollment, your university asks for separate proof of health insurance for the whole study period, which is a different requirement from the visa policy. Non-EU students can choose voluntary NFZ insurance (a contract with the local branch at a fixed PLN 55.80 a month on a PLN 620 contribution base), a private policy, or the karta pobytu program from Kniazha, which can also be bought for the whole study period. Confirm the exact form of the certificate with your university's international office.

  • The law does not set a mandatory insurance product just for a dormitory, but individual universities may require one in their internal rules and can refuse to house you on campus without it. So check the requirements of your university or the dormitory administration in advance. For this task, civil liability (OC) and accident cover (NNW), the karta pobytu program from Kniazha fits.

  • Study, exchange (Erasmus+), traineeship, and language course are related but separate categories. For the D-visa application, all of them use the standard visa policy of at least EUR 30,000. Exchange programs such as Erasmus+ add their own requirements (accident cover and civil liability), which the karta pobytu program from Kniazha meets; a traineeship has its own visa category, "Trainee", and a language course uses the same D-visa standard as study. We wrote a separate page for each situation.
